Kathryn Furniss
Based in Nelson, Kathryn Furniss is a self-taught New Zealand artist whose work is deeply inspired by the Pacific landscape, flora, fauna, and native birds. Encouraged by her artistic father from a young age, Kathryn developed her natural creativity into a distinctive style that blends organic forms with thoughtful storytelling.
Working primarily in acrylic and ink, her layered approach begins with loose abstract washes, building towards more detailed and controlled final brushstrokes. Her paintings often feature birds as symbols of emotion and connection — with shadow birds representing past loved ones, guardians, and the link between the past and present. Upright paddles in her work stand for protection and safety, while boats and oars represent journeys taken, both real and imagined.
Over the past 18 years, Kathryn has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and internationally.
At Celebrate Aotearoa, we love being able to celebrate a beautiful range of Kathryn’s homeware, accessories, and selected artworks in store, bringing her rich storytelling and connection to the Pacific into our space.
