‘Lesila’ is a family duo with 20 yr old Raiha Hill-Tupou of Māori (Ngāpuhi, Ngāpuhi ki Whaingaroa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and Tongan (Leimatu’a, Kolofo’ou) descent -behind the artwork, and Sela Tupou Moon (aunty) assists with the admin/logistics and custom enquiries.
Lesila is named after the eldest daughter of the Tupou fāmili, Lesila Lau'ese, who they know as Lau'ese. Lau'ese was born in Tonga with a form of Cerebral Palsy, and she was the muse of one of the first ever pieces made by this duo, which then inspired the creation of Lesila the brand.
Raiha is currently studying an LLB/BA in maori and pacific studies, her work takes inspiration from favourite artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robyn Kahukiwa, Faith Ringgold, favourite music and influences from both her cultures. Their pieces are also a family affair, inspired by family/nieces in cultural dance and attire.
